IMPORTANT NOTICE TO TYPE 2 DIABETICS: DO NOT immediately remove all excess sugar from your diet if you are diabetic and taking diabetic medications without first getting medical clearance, observation, and assistance. Any change to blood glucose should be closely monitored and a drastic reduction in carbohydrate intake without adjusting your medications can cause dangerous or even fatal hypoglycemic episodes. Please work with your medical team closely to gradually taper your carbohydrates lower until a baseline blood glucose is met. A rapid decrease in sugar will result in a reduced need for medications anywhere from one to two days, and can become life-threatening if not supervised and properly monitored. Diabetics must take extra precautions when making any dietary or lifestyle changes which can have an impact or interaction with regular medicine usage. Always work with your primary care physician and utilize your blood glucose meter and any other tools to control your diabetes.

EXTRA; TO TYPE 1 DIABETICS: Everything above for Type 2 diabetes still applies, but double the precaution as you are brittle when it comes to blood glucose and insulin need. Taking a life-altering step to drastically lower blood glucose has the dangerous potential to trigger the life-threatening condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This is due to ketones as a metabolite having an absolute requirement for insulin for proper metabolism, and lack of insulin to metabolize them. Adopting any LCHF can be a double-edged sword and must be monitored for your safety, and not following the recommendation to keep your medical team informed and failing to track your blood glucose at all times during the transition can result in death.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO THOSE WITH ACUTE PORPHYRIA: There is no hard evidence that excessive carbohydrate intake will prevent or alleviate a porphyric attack. It can and does lead to development of metabolic syndrome which includes but is not limited to: diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, neurodegenerative diseases, nutrient deficiencies, et cetera ad nosium. There is also no evidence that a low-carbohydrate lifestyle can cause harm when done with guidance from a Ketogenic specialist. Taking pure glucose can assist in lowering the severity of an attack and is a known medicinal application for acute porphyrias, but long term, consistent use will lead to insulin-related diseases. Due to the anti-epileptic and anti-seizure medicinal evidence of LCHF, particularly the Ketogenic lifestyle, it can be theorized ONLY that it will also work against the neurological manifestations in acute porphyrias as a therapeutic tool under close supervision. This has not been tested in a laboratory and should be read with great caution; only personal experiences exist as evidence and consumption of carbohydrate with light exposure can lead to an attack so must be avoided. Always work with your medical team with any dietary changes as they can trigger life-threatening episodes.
